Flight For Truth

Summer Reading

"I finished Flight for Truth today and
can't wait until Flight for Justice
is published in February."

I have been busy writing legal briefs, studying the A350, learning how to play golf and swimming across my lake. But in the mean time, I am working on the next in the series, Flight For Justice

Today I received a comment from a reader and we should let the world know...

Justice is Coming Soon!

"I finished Flight for Truth today and can't wait until Flight for Justice is published in February. Flight for Truth is a "must read" for those following Darby Bradshaw. Who, you ask? To get to know Darby, start at Flight for Control and follow Darby and her friends thru the series of five novels! You will get to know about aviation in a new way."  Book Review

Delay Does not mean Denial

Due to some very nasty tactics
the good old boys at Global Air Lines
Have Delayed Justice...
But the Novel is coming soon!

Darby Bradshaw identified serious safety concerns at her airline. Thus, she presented an internal safety report to her senior management, along with recommendations for improvements. What she didn't know was that she stepped into the middle of a plan to remove pilots permanently, where executives at Global Air Lines are working with Airbus to shutdown Boeing, encourages the FAA administrator to create legislation in their favor in exchange for a position on their board of directors, and they moved their SVP of flight operations into position as the new FAA administrator. With what Darby knew, they  had to discredit Darby at all cost.

What happened to Darby, should never happen to anyone. In Flight For Sanity, Global grounded a pilot for bringing safety information forward with an internal report, forcing her into a psychiatric evaluation. Flight For Truth was Darby's fight back. Management had waited until Christmas Eve, a year after they pulled her from duty, to tell her that her career was over. But she fights like hell to get her job back, and to hold the individual's accountable. What she doesn't know is the length that a handful of despicable individuals went to in order to keep her grounded.

Flight For Justice will continue the journey. In addition to proving her sanity, she is in the midst of an AIR 21 lawsuit. Discovery provides answers to the corruption, violation of federal regulations, contractual violations, and the needless death of 228 people. The corruption slithers all the way to Washington D.C., and nobody is safe. Darby's chances to win are good, but it's not about truth or justice, but what you can prove in court.

Darby Bradshaw and her attorney Robert Allen take on an airline, their million dollar legal team, and the FAA at the highest levels. The reader will have an insider's view on the corruption of the aviation industry. What makes this novel interesting, is that the dialogue was taken from actual depositions and trial testimony, leaving the reader scratching their head and thinking... this is airline management?

Summer Reading...
and read the entire series.

You can order you autographed copies
on this site, too.

Happy Reading!

Enjoy the Journey!

Flight For Truth

From Justice to Truth!

The series continues!

The last couple years have been a bit busy earning a PhD, checking out on the B777, remodeling a house, and writing legal briefs. However last week I made a commitment to get the next novel complete. Which was going to be Flight for Justice. However, justice will have to wait. The story of my life. Flight For Truth will come first.

Flight For Truth
Is coming soon...

I don't have a cover idea yet, but I am taking suggestions. I do have an incredible reader who is editing on the fly with me. I write a chapter a day and send it to Trimbi. She edits and sends back. Thank you Trimbi!

I'm writing this novel in 100 days!

I recently attended a conference and someone made a 100 day writing goal, because "It was impossible to write a book in 100 days." Then I said, "I am writing a book in 100 days, because all you have to do is write a chapter a day."

The stories are exciting. The action is ratcheting up. The truth is in the fiction. Literally. And the reason I am writing Flight For Truth before Flight For Justice-- the novel would be too huge if I tried to write it as one story. Flight For Truth will determine if Darby returns to the job she loves. Flight For Justice will make her whole. Or will it?

While I'm writing the next novel...
please catch up on the series.

The First Novel...

Imagine writing a novel, Flight For Control, with the theme of mental health embedded within the world of aviation. And then two months after your novel is released a Jet Blue captain is locked out of the flight deck by his first officer, after he suffers from a mental breakdown. What if he hadn't been locked out? And then four years later a Germanwings first officer successfully locks the captain out of the fight deck and flies his plane into the mountains. Read more here...

 The Second Novel...

Imagine writing a novel and Asiana crashes in San Francisco, and you have a scene that mirrors that event. And then your pilots are flying an A330 to Singapore as a storm builds, they get caught ... and two years later Air Asia takes the same route and flies into that storm but crashes. Fiction that mirrors truth.  Read more here...

The Third Novel...

Imagine being an author working on your PhD at the same time you are an airline pilot. What if all those worlds merged into one exciting adventure, where truth was scarier than fiction and the lines between your worlds blurred? You would write the novel Flight For Survival.
Read more here...

The Fourth Novel...

It's insane how airlines are cutting training at the expense of safety. Insanity extends to the FAA, where industry issues of automation dependency, lack of hand flying skills, confusion, and lack of understanding stem back to 1996, yet these issues are more prevalent than ever. Imagine what happens to the person challenging the system...

The Dark Side of Aviation

Truth in Fiction

The Best of All the Series

There is more truth than fiction in the Flight for Series. Years ago, I speculated the degradation of our industry would impact pilots’ mental health—it did. I envisioned airline management’s cutting training would increase airline incidents and accidents—that, too, has occurred. I later watched the FAA look the other way when airlines violated federal regulations and learned that airlines own the FAA at the highest level. The FAA also enables manufacturers to produce less than airworthy aircraft, and nobody speaks out because of fear of retaliation. The AIR21 statute purported to protect the employee, more so protects the company. Unions like ALPA, lack unity and look the other way to help management’s bottom line, the pilot be damned. As the series unfolds, you’ll come to the same conclusion as I did—obliteration of the pilot job.

Fifteen years ago, I surmised what would happen if airline management degraded the pilot job, as to what impact that would have on pilots’ mental health. Three years after I published my first novel, Flight for Control, a Germanwings pilot intentionally crashed his plane, killing everyone on board. All accidents in Flight for Control were based on actual airline accidents. How the planes crashed were true, but why they crashed was fiction. Yet the truth is that mental health of our pilots today is in a rapid decline.

When Northwest Airlines merged with Delta, I observed how training had shifted from learning the plane, to the “be the monkey, push the button and get the banana” mentality. I wrote about substandard B757 and A330 training in Flight for Safety. Shortly thereafter we saw Air France 447 fall into the ocean in the same manner as to the events in the novel. What the reader may not know, was the merger between airlines Coastal and Global, was the Northwest and Delta merger. The atrocious training events in Flight for Safety, were ongoing at Delta. More so, both Delta and the FAA knew of the faulty equipment that took down AF447 but did nothing until 228 people died. My writing a post about this accident, and how to fly out of a stall, became a central theme in the challenge of my mental health years later.

I enrolled in Embry Riddle Aeronautical University to earn a PhD, to better understand aviation safety, and the ensuing novels, Flight for Survival and Flight for Sanity, were inspired by Delta’s actions in trying to silence me for all that I learned regarding Safety Management Systems (SMS). More than silence me, Delta management attempted to destroy me and remove me from the industry permanently.

I fought back, just as Darby did in the novel Flight for Truth. The journey from a false mental health accusation, and how I returned to the flight deck, mirrors that of Darby Bradshaw in this novel. Ironically, shortly after Delta pulled me from duty and grounded me, I spoke as a guest with a doctor regarding mental health on a live interview. That interview is in this novel. Most importantly, Darby’s ability to beat the mental health challenge and not allow the process to drive her crazy is exactly how I survived.

Flight for Discovery included what we learned in my discovery for my trial, and how Delta attempted to bury me, with verbatim deposition testimony. I used the exact testimony in the novel, and nobody believed there was any way possible Coastal Air Lines would go to trial. Yet not unlike the real world, Delta Airlines decided to fight an indefensible position. Why? Because their insurance company paid for their defense and the size of egos surpassed all reason.

Now we have Flight for Justice. While I changed the names, the trial deposition testimony is verbatim. The only character’s testimony that differs slightly is Neil. His testimony was my husband’s, except for the job offer. The FAA’s complicit behavior is fact. The FAA administrator’s owned by Delta is fact. ALPA’s participation and events are fact. The legal system and transferring of judges and purchased arbitrators are fact. A doctor forfeiting his medical license is fact. The only fiction appears to be the names of the characters, and the plot. Yet even the plot may not be that far fetched.

The central theme of all the novels is the destruction of the pilot job with autonomous planes on horizon, and the effort to fight for the pilot job and improve training and aviation safety. While many do not believe autonomous aircraft to be a reality, when you read about the non-interruptible autopilot, the patents, and the Airbus ATTOL system in Flight for Justice be aware that all of that is fact. The training events and near-death experiences listed in this novel all occurred at Delta Air Lines. Even the pilots falling asleep on short final was true. Despite winning my legal battle in Petitt vs Delta, nobody was held accountable at the airline; therefore, I ended up walking away from my airline career.

Perhaps the death of my airline career and Darby living my story inspired the ending to this novel. But the lack of accountability at Delta and the FAA’s complicit behavior inspired the next. Flight for Revenge is coming soon and will be the first completely “fiction” novel. For all those involved, or looked the other way, be it Delta, the FAA, ALPA, AMAS, and/or the legal system, you should be incredibly grateful that I am not crazy. Because, when there is no justice there is revenge.

STORY:

Three airliners have crashed in the last year and nobody knows why. After a ten-year leave, Kathryn Jacobs has been invited back to the N.T.S.B to investigate this series of unexplained airline crashes. But her husband, Captain Bill Jacobs, has his concerns. While her twin daughters are off at camp, and Bill is actively campaigning for the Pilot Union Presidency, Kathryn secretly begins her investigation.

What she learns will shock the nation.

Flight For Control is a thriller that reads like a mystery. But to Kathryn, there is no mystery on the condition of the airline industry—it’s broken. Planes are crashing. Pensions are lost. Pilots are financially and emotionally bankrupt due to fatigue, furloughs, and loss of seniority. It’s time that someone takes control before it’s too late—unless it already is.

Your life is in your pilot’s hands.
Do you know who’s flying your plane?

WARNING:

Please be advised this book is for mature audiences only. Okay... you don't have to be mature, but you should be old enough to deal with some serious real-life issues. While fiction, Flight For Control harnesses the current airline environment, economy, and the stress your pilots face daily. Where is the union? What is the FAA doing? What is management's fiduciary responsibility? Flight For Control also contains strong sexual content. When on the big screen, it will be R-Rated. Be ready for the flight of your life, it may be your last.

If you can handle the flight, then you will love the action and adventure of Flight For Control.

Read what the experts say:

Flight For Control is a fascinating debut and a truly terrifying insider's take on the airline industry by an author who knows what she's talking about. You will not want to get on an airplane after reading Petitt's book.

“I have a mental map of the book, and boy, is this one ever a labyrinth. Think three-dimensional Midwestern corn maze. It's quite a wild ride. A lot of it scares me, but it reveals a lot about the current state of the commercial aviation industry, stuff that most people don't even think about or can imagine happening..."

Aviation Needs Your Help...

Justice Depends on It!

As you know I have been writing aviation thrillers that have taken a life of their own due to a litany of ongoing events. This is the situation-- in every story there is good and evil. But what happens when the good wins ... but evil prevails? That is not how the world should work. That is definitely not how the story should end.

I need your help to support the real Darby Bradshaw in her fight for justice. Her attorney has recommended a GoFundMe account to help with her legal fees, that are well over $600,000 and adding up daily, but she has refused. She even sold her home to help finance this fight for safety. Darby's case has turned into a battle of attrition where the airline is utilizing vexatious litigation with stockholder funds to destroy a pilot who was promoting safety.

(Not really Darby, but who should play her in the movie)

Today I am asking the entire Aviation Community and anyone who loves to travel (and read) to please help with this fight for safety and justice. I am not asking anyone to donate money, I am asking everyone to help the real Darby by buying books. Even sharing this post on your social media platforms can help. I am giving 100% of all proceeds directly to the real Darby Bradshaw's legal battle. Buy them for yourself, gift them to others, and know that you are helping create an industry that we can be proud to call aviation, and leave a legacy to those coming up behind us. Please help Darby to continue to survive, as she has already faced the most challenging 6 years of her life that may not end for years to come.

In Flight For Discovery, we never imagined that Global Air Lines would go to trial after everything that Darby and her attorney discovered. Not to give away any plot points, but in real life, Global went to trial and lost. Global appealed, and they lost again. Global is paying seven attorneys from two of the largest law firms in the United States millions of dollars to defend an indefensible position. This law only provides for "reasonable" attorney fees for the complainant. Depending how long the bad guys drag it out, she could win but financially lose. Darby is not crying... she is standing her ground. Management on the other hand are behaving like two-year-olds.

Global has lost on every front. Today Global managers are stomping their feet and crying. They are throwing all their toys at the wall to see if one sticks, hoping to get their way. We are unsure if the law firms are promoting the current ridiculous litigation, or if this is an executive decision to delay the inevitable and the CEO has told the legal teams to spare no expense and destroy Darby.

While Darby has won, and won again, the legal proceedings continue. The Department of Labor Administrative review board (ARB) remanded her case back to the original judge because her award was unprecedentedly "too high". There was a reason for that award. While the ARB removed her forward pay and damages, they also decided to allow the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) to reopen the record and allow for new testimony to determine if he was correct in his assumption that the retaliation would be ongoing through the end of her career, and cause her great harm.

The ALJ will soon learn that he was correct in his predictions, but he could never imagine the depths that the Global management team would go to harm Darby. These legal battles are financially draining-- Global's intent.

Since Global's recent loss they have (1) filed a petition for review, (2) prematurely filed an appeal in another court out of jurisdiction and prior to the case being closed, (3) filed a motion for a protective order, or, in the alternative for reconsideration, or, in the alternative to certify for an interlocutory review, (4) filed a motion for leave to file reply in support of it's cross-motion for stay, (5) filed an opposition motion to for additional hearings to consider further evidence of lost future earnings, emotional distress, humiliation, and loss of reputation as a result of the airlines adverse action taken against her and engaging in protected activity and for pre-hearing discovery schedule, and (6) filed a 186-page brief in the court they do not belong, to answer a singular question.

With each event Darby's expenses increase. She needs your help. There are good people working behind the scenes to help me ensure this process never harms anyone else again. Unfortunately, nobody could have possibly known how ineffective the AIR21 statute could be until Global airline management broke the law and then snubbed their nose at it, were too arrogant to quit, and opted to spend millions in litigation versus training pilots or adequately staffing the airlines, at stockholder and passenger expense.

If I Had One Wish For Aviation

It would be never
to have another airliner crash!

Flying is safer than driving. But when an airline accident happens, and hundreds of lives are lost at once, it’s an event that drives pain through souls worldwide compounding the sorrow.

Passengers and flight attendants have put their lives into the hands of their pilots. We pilots have put our faith into the system—one that we depend upon to keep us proficient, trained and provide support. Airlines depend upon aircraft manufacturers to provide reliable and efficient airplanes.

If any ‘one’ piece of this matrix breaks, the other members of the team can hold it together. When two or more pieces fall apart we’ve got the perfect storm—a storm that can take down any airliner.

My philosophy in life:
If you do not like something—fix it.

I’m a fixer and here is my plan:
  • Write a series of aviation novels inspired by real life drama of what we in the industry are living. Three women, Darby, Kathryn and Jackie, take on my fight for safety in the flight series. The series are designed to create awareness.

Flight For Control  A story about mental health in an unstable system. How far can we push a pilot before they break?

Flight For Safety  A story about automation, a downward shift in training, and what happens when pilots forget how to fly.

Flight For Survival A story about safety culture, safety management systems, and what happens when a pilot decides action needs to be taken because the industry is failing.

Flight For Sanity  Pilot error is blamed for accidents and incidents worldwide. Yet the truth runs deeper than anyone suspected. What's going on within in the industry, and the extent that management will go to destroy a pilot's career, is pure insanity.

The process continues...

Update: Started in fall 2014.

Update: Passed Qualifying exams in August, 2016!

  • Upgrade to captain after I finish my PhD on whatever plane I can hold on the West Coast. No commuting to the bottom for a 4th stripe for me. Life quality is essential for a happy life.

Update: Bid B777 in LAX (awaiting training). Captain bid on hold.

  • Write book four: Fight For Sanity.  When whistle blower laws protect those who take issues externally, there is no protection for those fighting for safety on the inside.

Update: Finished Flight For Sanity! Available Feb. 2017

  • Write book five (Non-Fiction): Fight For Safety Inside the Iron Bubble, the truth behind the flight series.
Update: Write 5th novel: Flight For Justice, and then the Non-fiction book on the Flight For Series.

  • Become CEO of my airline or the Secretary of the Department of Transportation: To impact change for a safety system. Airline side, to support an airline that focuses on safety as the first priority, with full support of SMS, built from a strong safety culture - reporting, flexible, learning, informed, and just - that supports diversity and full pilot support with appropriate reward for all. Government side, to create overall industry change focused on safety.

Modified Plans:

  • To finish my PhD and 5th novel in 2017. Then after I'm on the B777, I will attend law school with the intent to change the Railway Labor Act. This 91 year old act actually inhibits aviation safety through archaic processes in a modern world. I will ensure what my character Darby Bradshaw faced in Flight For Sanity, will never happen to anyone again!

The only way we can improve anything is if we do not blindly accept mediocrity.

The result will be a healthier work environment, pride to aviation employees, growth of an industry, and improved safety for passengers with zero accidents.

I need your help.
The only way to do this is through awareness.

One person cannot change the world, but they can invite everyone to board the plane on a flight for safety. The only way to make my dream for aviation to come true is with your support. I’m writing novels for pilots, flight attendants and passengers alike— for anyone who loves a good thriller and mystery with a little romance. It’s just plane fun—fun with an agenda.

There is a far-reaching plan for these novels, and we’ve just begun this journey. Please join me in this flight for safety. It’s going to be one heck of a ride.

You’re Invited on my Flight For Safety!

And to help everyone reach their dreams
This book is for you:

You don't have to be a pilot to Be
the Captain of Your Life!

Thank you for reading my novels. And please help me spread the word. Leave comments on Amazon, shout about this on your blog… We have a long flight ahead of us, but together we can make a difference.

What can you do to help aviation?

What is your wish?

Please read the Flight series...

Flying Together

As a Crew in Adversity!

Covid-19 has shown that adversity happens
beyond our control.
We do our best to support each other, and survive.
But when actions are intentional to harm someone,
We support and Fight to Make it Right!

Thanks to the aviation community I was able to finish my PhD.  I turned that research into a book, Normalization of Deviance, a Threat to Aviation SafetyWhile I was working on this PhD, I also wrote two novels with the plots intertwined with the research. I appreciate your support in reading and sharing these stories, as the themes are aviation safety.

Flight For Sanity

Imagine flight operations management retaliating against a pilot for providing a safety report. It's hard to believe. But the the truth can be found within the pages of Flight For Sanity. Why would airline management retaliate? Ego. Money. Power.  We may not know the why, but we do know how far they will go in this novel. How far would they go in real life? That's the scariest part of this novel.

Aviation News Analyst, John Nance, has become a fan of the stories and following the drama, because he knows the truth...

"When Karlene Petitt grabs you by the throat with her fast-paced narrative, she doesn't let you go until the early hours of the morning! Flight for Sanity plunges you into a world in which money trumps everything...aviation safety, homeland security, and even the presidency. Couldn't happen? Some of it already has, as with the use of fraudulent mental concerns to silence airline pilots who dare to point out safety problems.

A wild and scary ride with a satisfying and potentially accurate ending. And there may not be enough orange jump suits to go around!"

John J. Nance
Aviation Analyst, ABC World News
Author of LOCKOUT (WildBluePress)

Grounded for two years...

Flight For Truth

It's hard to believe that senior flight operations management could keep a pilot out of the flight deck for two years with a false medical diagnosis. But they did. When you read how they did it, you will be shocked.  The scariest part of this novel is that the people involved, are the same people tasked to keep our passengers safe.
While Darby is doing everything she can to follow the steps to return to work, unbeknownst to her there is great power behind the scenes fighting to keep her out--- The CEO of her airline. The Board of Directors.  The Airline's legal team. A Psychiatrist that is touted to be a "Big Gun" by the FAA. A Chief Pilot. Two of the highest level management pilots. The question is why? Even her pilot union condoned the action, fearful of what the next FAA administrator would do if they didn't.

FAA Warning!

"This case is a time bomb with Mayo versus Wood. It is best decided in Washington. I would just defer her case. Don’t get yourself into the corner by advocating any more than you have for the airman. This is not your fault, the baddies are the Airline who went down this route with the airman." FAA.gov.

How does the FAA Administrator
and the Boeing B737 Max
Find their Way into this novel?

You'll have to read to find out!

Captain Nance is hanging with the story and surmises the underlaying reason for the actions against Darby. It's all about safety...

"Would you knowingly climb aboard a pilotless airliner, flown from airport to airport by computers and promoted by airline executives who would stop at nothing to make a buck? After all, it makes economic sense. Computers don't need rest, equal pay, and vacations.... they also don't break ranks and expose weaknesses in an airline's safety system. Courage is reading this book the night before flying somewhere commercially."

John J. Nance
Author, Pandora's Clock, 16 Souls, and 21 others
Aviation Analyst ABC World News
737 Captain, Rtd

Fight For Justice

The FAA building, above, is the inspiration for the culmination of Darby's Fight For Justice in the next novel: Flight For Justice. How does Darby learn the truth? It's all about discovery in the legal process during her AIR 21 TrialFlight For Justice is on its way, where Darby and the world will learn the truth.
