Give a Child

The Flight of His Life...

My friend Brian, from Renewed Pilot, and his wife have raised five incredible children. But they always wanted to adopt, and provide an opportunity for a child who may otherwise be lost. They are now making that dream come true and adopting a little boy from Africa.  However,  as Brian said...

"After two years of navigating through a sea of bureaucracy, we're getting ready to travel to Africa to meet the little boy who will become our son. We need to make two round trips for a total of four weeks in the country. (No "non-revving" for these trips!) That's a lot of airfare, lodging and meal expenses! (Combined with all the other expenses, let's just say it's a LOT of money!
)"

How can you help?

I ordered one for myself and hubby...

Get yours today and help
change the life of a little boy!

It's time we create change for a better world. That means to place our focus on where change begins... with the children. Brian and his family are making a difference in the world by giving a little boy a chance at a life. A renewed life... and we can help them. Please take a moment and order your shirt.

Activity is a Blessing

Keep Moving!

"Being busy is a blessing
because being bored is a sign
that things are going very wrong
as there is so much to accomplish in life."

There is so much to accomplish in life. Are you filling your destiny? Often I'm told that I am too busy.  But I am busy filling my days with passion and conviction of making better jobs for our fellow aviators, and safer skies for our passengers.  As Jeremy said, if I was feeling board.. I would not be accomplishing all that needs to be done.

What appears to be busy to one...
is passion to the other living the life!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!

Purpose in Life

To Help Others...

"Our prime purpose in this life it to help other.
And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them."
Dalai Lama

Sometimes we can take our lessons from children who help to lift stones, not throw them.  Our world appears to be filled with anger, hate, and harm. It's time to change that pattern. We must help, not harm. Help carry the load of others, and if you can't, avoid throwing stones. It's about Integrity and doing the right thing.

Chris Warner and Don Schmincke

Friday's Fabulous Flyers

 Chris and Don

Chris Warner
Chris is a more than a entrepreneur, he's an Emmy-nominated filmmaker, and climber who has led more that 150 international mountaineering expeditions. He is also an educator who teaches leadership development and founder of Earth Treks, a chain of climbing centers.

Don Schmincke
Don is the "mad scientist turned business sage", who has utilize his anthropology and evolutionary genetic background to remedy the high failure rates of business leaders. As a keynote speaker, and guess on CNN, he's been featured in many forums such as the Wall Street Journal. He is also the founder of the SAGA Leadership Institute.

Chris and Don are the authors
of my newest favorite book!

For all those who say they don't have time to read, I say... make time! Especially for High Altitude Leadership.  What does leadership, mountain climbing, and life have in common? The parallels are outlined in the chapter titles: Fear of Death, Selfishness, Tool of Seduction, Arrogance, Lone Heroism, Cowardice, Comfort, and Gravity. But the culmination comes when the Journey Begins.

"Perseverance jump-starts the climb
when all momentum seems lost"

I had the honor and opportunity to speak with Don about Safety Management Systems, and one thing lead to another and I learned he had written a couple books. So I bought them. I will start the second tonight. However, I couldn't put  High Altitude Leadership down.

One page you will be on the mountain with Chris, and the next in the boardroom with Don, learning parallel skills needed to manage a business, or save your life.  This book pulled together my favorite subjects of why we do what we do, and how we are the masters or our own lives, be it on a mountain or in business.

"Maximize chance opportunities
by being open to new experiences"

Everything comes when we need it most. This was one of those times.  There was section toward the end of the book that helped me with a personal dilemma. We have all found ourselves in a situation when it's much easier to give up, than press forward.

I was facing one of those moments of knowing the right thing to do, but the pain I would face would probably be long lasting.  I had to take that next step, but I wanted encouragement.

And then I opened the book and read, "the biggest challenge wouldn't be the physical but emotional"... I knew that was true, and then I would feel "doubt and despair, when the reality of the challenge would exceed the passion..."  Does that sound encouraging or what? But, then the book reminded me that when we want to give up, that's the time we need to keep going...

"Take the pain and the discomfort with you
onward and upward.
Just keep taking one more step."

Sometimes life is about taking one more step!

You do not have to be a mountain climber or a CEO to appreciate the power within the pages of

Training Pilots

Is More Than a Science

It's a passion!

A week ago I visited PMI, The Pacific Maritime Institute, during their program development and harbor pilot training.  I had the opportunity to watch training development, and pilot testing.

PMI wrote the training program with event sets similar to that airline pilot program training events.  The difference was the testing process. There was team of subject matter experts that sat in a room and observed a the first group of harbor pilots being tested. We all observed them on the video, monitoring their actions and dialogue.  Then the debrief was from an operational perspective, what the pilots did, why, what worked with the program, what didn't ... why or why not. They tweaked the program, and then...

They had another crew, who had no knowledge of the program, go into the simulator and they were the next test subjects.

What this all reminded me of was the power of continual improvement, subject matter experts, and videos in the simulator!!

The photo above, center screen, was the simulator we watched the pilots and captain. The top screen displayed what the instruments were doing, and the lower screen not only showed the instruments, but the ship track, radar, radius...etc. Basically we saw everything the crew did, watched how they set up their instruments, and at the end they discussed their  what they would do differently and why.

The airline industry should adapt the process of how PMI trains harbor pilots, to training airline pilots.  If anyone wants cameras in the aircraft think twice.  I say put cameras in the simulators to improve the quality of training through quality debriefing. That's how we learn.

Thank you PMI
for allowing me to share the experience.

For anyone who wants to
exercise and improve your boating skills

I recommend PMI!

Cleared For Takeoff

Time for Adventure!

Guess what found it's way into my mailbox?

An advanced readers copy of There I Wuz, volume 3. This book is filled with stories of adventure and real life, with a whole lot of aviation that I couldn't put down. I don't think you'll ever find a compilation of stories in one place like this. The photos also make this series incredible, as it's fun to put a face to the story, and see the plane after the typhoon. My favorite photo is that of Eric's Dad, Petty Officer, Richard Auxier... too cute!  But there is so much more...

There are even stories from our good buddies

The There I Wuz series just keeps getting better!

Pre-order your kindle:

If you haven't read There I Was volume 2...

Most importantly, you can find all

A perfect gift...

All about the Pilot

Military Pilots:

They are cold, steely-eyed, weapons systems managers, who kill bad people and break things. However, they can also be very charming and personable. The average pilot, despite sometimes having a swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring. These feelings generally just don't involve anyone else.

Have a GREAT Week!

Enjoy the Journey and remember to smile!
