The Next Big Thing

Last week I was asked to answer a few questions about my work in progress by a pilot/author Harrison Jones. What an honor to involved in this blog hop. But first... please meet Harrison.

Harrison Jones is not just any pilot/author. Harrison defines the meaning of success—From Mechanic to pilot, he has achieved his dreams.  In 1967 he took flying lessons and obtained his commercial license with multi-engine and instrument ratings. It wasn’t long until he became a flight instructor and taught for over ten years. In 1972 he accepted a position with an airline as a pilot ground school instructor and taught aircraft systems until 1976, when he accepted a pilot position with the company. And now he writes novels. I’ve just order both his books and they are coming soon. I will keep you posted and we will hear more soon.

This amazing man can be found at HarrisonJones.org

So what is my Next Big Thing?
Here you go....

What is the working title of your book?

Flight ForSafety.  This is the second of a three book series. Flight For Control is the first. Flight For Survival will be the next.  And one day, we will see ‘Fight’ For Safety the truth behind the fiction of all three novels. That will happen around retirement.

Where did the idea come from for the book?

Imagine being called into the Chief Pilots’ office for the first time in a 27-year airline career because you were writing about safety issues of the most horrendous accident of all times. Imagine sitting at the table, heads talking about social media, face-book, blogging, flight attendants, union contract…and your mind drifts to irony of the meeting. Your eyebrows knit and eyes narrow. Your mind whirls.  Is this for real? And then you think, “What if…”

What genre does your book fall under?

Definitely Aviation Thriller/ Mystery. Some of the ladies who have picked it might want to call it women’s fiction/mystery. And yet with the same book a pilot said, “If Tom Clancy wrote about airliners, this would be it.”  So I’m thinking I have accomplished my goal—writing something for everyone. Being a female pilot, what should we expect?

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Flight For Control is in motion toward film. I’m writing the screenplay in January. But the same characters will carry through to Flight For Safety. Note: If you’re a member of the airline industry and want to be an extra in the flight for control movie, email FlightForControlTheMovie@gmail.com and leave me a message.

Back to casting: John Travolta would be Captain Bill Jacobs. Bill’s wife, NTSB investigator Kathryn, would have to be Julianne Moore. The infamous Darby would be played by Amy Adams. Yes, I have given this a great deal of though.

What is the one sentence synopsis of your book?

One sentence? I thought one page was a challenge. Here we go:

Pacific Air Lines’ crash has sent a message to the world—Pilots don’t know how to fly their planes—unfortunately behind this reality hides corruption and greed which has turned each flight into a game of Russian roulette.

If you plan to publish, will your book be self-published or published traditionally?

I am going to maintain my relationship with Jet Star publishing. For those of you who don’t know, this is my publishing company.  We are just getting started, but one day Jet Star will be the producer of thrillers and mysteries, historical fiction, children, motivation and young adult books, too.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

The first draft of Flight For Safety took me 6 months. I’m on edit three. Flight For Control was 4 months, and editing took two years.  I’m writing smarter this time. I hope.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Oh wow—this is a tough one. I’m thinking this book would be a cross between Wallstreet and the Insider—Aviation executives, and the insider speaking the truth.

I have a unique plot, appealing to men and women, pilots and not. While my stories are wrapped around the airline industry, they are powerful stories. A little sex. Flying. Mystery. Truth behind the fiction. I’ve got it all.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

Flight For Safety was inspired by the AF 447 crash, and the passengers who count on their pilots to know how to fly their planes when the automation breaks. Why did this happen? Read on...

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

That one day Flight For Safety will come out in the non-fiction realm as ‘Fight’ For Safety. Until then, the reader can only imagine which part(s) of this, and all my novels, are real.

There is a method to my madness. Entertain, and create awareness.
Flight For Control—The essence of the Industry and the impact on mental health.
Flight For Safety—The impact of automation and proficiency.
Flight For Survival—How long has it been since your pilots have flown?

The Next Big Thing:

I have a special surprise. I have two next big things to shout about.

Syd Blue
and
Cap'n Aux

I met Syd Blue at a SFO writer’s conference two years ago. I think we were the only two pilots out of 500 participants, and we found each other by accident. As a child, traveling with her father and brothers in their small plane, Syd was the one who fit in the baggage compartment, where she began writing stories at a very young age. Syd has turned her love of aviation into a business with her Cessna, and is busily writing too. She is supporting children with her passion. Syd believes there is a niche for the positive motiviation for kids and aviation, and I agree. My copy of fly girl is on it’s way. I can hardly wait. Syd will also be joining me at the Western Washington Aviation Fair in February. For now, join Syd’s blog, Big Bear Grizzly Net and watch for her Next Big Thing.

Cap'n Aux, is a captain for a major airline who I met on line. But, our paths almost crossed at one of my previous airlines. We were hired within months of each other back in the 80's. Imagine that. I just received his book in the mail, The Last Bush Pilots, and all I can say is wow… this is a major fun book!

Spoiler alert: Captain Aux will be my Friday Flyer tomorrow. So I’m going to make you come back and read all about him then. And more on his fabulous book. For now, put Cap'n Aux blog on your to read list and watch for his Next Big Thing.

Pilots For Kids

Each year groups of pilots all over the country visit hospitals bringing gifts, and smiles for children stuck in the hospital over Christmas. Last night Pilots for kids visited the children at Seattle's Children's Hospital. Nights like this remind me how lucky I am, and to never take my health for granted.

Giving is a great and wonderful thing. Especially over the holidays. But sometimes we don't want to give. Germs that is. Last week I flew to Austin, and painted a room, and played with one grandson. When I returned, I had a sleepover with three of my other grandchildren...who all had colds. Unfortunately this grandma picked up a bug.

Thus I became the designated driver helping one of Santa's helpers get to the hospital. Not wanting to expose the children to any germs, I didn't stay. But the jolly continues...

What did you do to share a bit of Holiday Spirit today?

Happy Holidays!

Monday Motivation... Why?

"Mommy, I'm okay,
But all my friends are dead."

One survivor. A 1st grade class. Can anything be more sorrowful than a statement like this? Everyone is asking, "why?" "How could this happen?" I'm not going to get into the politics of people's rights to own guns. Every situation is different. But the 'why' to this horrid travesty is obivious...

A sick young man had access to guns.

He killed his mother, and then he went to school. He took the lives of innocents. 8 adults and 20 children died last Friday. Could this particular incident have been avoided? Could it happen in your town? If the answer is yes, then ask yourself what you can do to make sure that it doesn't.

Please send prayers to the families
in Newtown, Connecticut.

If there is any gift you can give,
this holiday season, this is it.

Rob Akers had a great idea on how to send compassion.

Today, like everyone else I am sad and thank you for your thoughts about those in Sandy Hook. I have a suggestion to pass along. At each hotel this week at a minimum, I am buying a few past cards and stamps. I am leaving them with the front desk staff and asking them to have people sign the cards and when they get full, to please mail them to this address:

Don Brosnan

Friday's Fabulous Flyer

Don Brosnan

You might say it’s possible to find Angels in the most unusual places during the holidays. This one I found flying Seattle/Amsterdam.

Don Brosnan started as a Flight Attendant for Hughes Airwest in 1977. He’s been through the mergers with the best of them, but nothing cuts his spirit and generosity. Each day he is filled with gratitude for the abundance in his life, and shares that joy with everyone he meets. I'm surprised our paths did not cross at NWA, but could not be happier that I finally had the opportunity to meet this incredible man.

What makes Don so special—other than he is a genuinely kind man, excellent flight attendant, and an artist? He’s filled with compassion, and shares it.

Sunset on the Canal by Don

About a year ago Don and his wife, Chris, were watching a 20/20 story about foster kids being put on multiple psychotropic drugs to control their behavior because it was cheaper than counseling. But times are changing and there is a fabulous place in Memphis called Mayhurst that understands a better reality—despite the cost. What price can you put on a child’s life?

Don tells the story best:

“Some of these kids have been in 25 foster homes in 5 or 6 years. Who wouldn't act out? I don't think drugs are the best way to deal with these kids. Maryhurst takes in the most traumatized teen girls and through therapy are able to get 3/4 of them off the drugs.

We also learned they have weekends where people volunteer to do landscaping, painting dorm rooms etc. Last spring we decided to go Kentucky and get involved. After that we were hooked. Knowing so many of the girls feel forgotten by the world we decided to start the Christmas card drive hoping they won't feel so invisible.”

The best way to learn about Maryhurst is check out their website at maryhurst.org

Don and Chris are encouraging you to send greeting cards to these girls. If someone wants to join these holiday angels in their Christmas card project, please go to: FaceBookFosterKidsCardDrive You don't need to have a facebook account to view his page.

All you need is a great big heart and greeting cards. Then send them to

"The Girls, C/O Maryhurst
1015 Dorsey Lane Louisville,
KY 40223"

There are 64 girls. Guess how many I am sending?
What about you?

They tell me it's also OK to include a gift card from Kohl's or Old Navy.

When I asked Don what his wish for this holiday season was, he said, “I guess that would be that everyone do something for someone who is less fortunate than them.”

And then he added, “Never give so much it hurts but give enough that it feels really good.”

Now, get your package of tissues and watch this 20/20 video. And then please go to the Foster Kids Card Drive Page and like. Then send your cards. What a difference this will make in a life of a child.

This is what the holiday season is all about.
Sending love to someone who needs it.
How will you spread the cheer?

Do you think we could find 65 people to send a gift card in a greeting card? Wouldn't that be something if all the kids could get something special this year.

Happy Holidays!

Happy Hanukah

While not a major Jewish Holiday
Hanukkah is a festival
That lasts for more than a day

Presents, gifts, and a lots of delicious food
During eight days of celebration
Spirits are festive and good

Some families exchange gifts all in one night
And others gift for all eight days
Communities, and families decide what is right
Hanukkah occurs at different times each year
throughout late November and December
according to the Hebrew calendar my dear

Fried potato pancakes served with applesauce
In Israel jelly doughnuts are the choice
Latkes and Sufganiyot are enough for applause

A candle is lit on the menorah each night
symbolizing a miracle on the small amount of oil
that lasted in the Temple in Jerusalem
For 8 days and 8 nights

May Everyone Have a Beautiful Holiday Season
