B777 Trivia Challenge 2

The Fun Continues...

The fun began when I asked a simple question on B777:

"What is the system that if you
turn the switch to OFF,
that you will actually
turn something in the aircraft ON?"

ANSWER:

CABIN/ UTILITY SWITCH

When you turn the utility switch ON, and AC power is available, power is provided to cabin and utility system. When you turn the switch to off, power will be removed from the cabin and utility systems and also turns on some cabin lighting.

However, let's add to the challenge. Here is another question....

What  switches are normally left in OFF
for normal operation?

Enjoy the Journey!

    1. Nope... these are switches that are always selected off. The items you mentioned could be turned on.
Keep the answers coming. Oh wait... You did. Awesome!

    1. Nope. Not the Jettison pumps because if you want to use them, you have to turn them on. Good guess!

    2. I'm confused then. Are these switches that can't be turned on?

    3. They could be turned on. But if you turned them on, their automated function wouldn't work. So, they must be left off to work as they are supposed to. Seriously, I read about this system and missed it on the test...then had to look it up, and thought Boeing was crazy to call these switches off, which they could have termed it on. As if there is not enough to learn.

  3. You need to stop stumping me with these. It has me feeling all kinds of silly. I just did a through scan of the overhead and came up with nothing. And there is no way a sim pilot would know the trivia about the CABIN/ UTILITY SWITCH

    1. Lol. Well, you should because during your imaginary flight are you carrying passengers or what? Okay.... you're exempt for that one. But... this one is an elusive little question. I will think of a brilliant "hint" to help everyone.

      But now... back to studying!

    2. I guess Monkey Grind Coffee might make the frequent hard landing and the occasional crash acceptable :) Man now I really need to go to Seattle for coffee. Their Greenwood is to die for. Say is there a time travel button on the 777 that let's me go back to when Piecora's was open and I had a place in The CD? Clearly there are a few buttons on that panel that remain a mystery to me

    3. They have a killer IFE actually. It features Netflix, Amazon Prime, Audible and anything else connected to the massive 3 TB media library. The drawbacks are all economy seating and poor flying :D

    4. Monkey Grind Coffee sounds perfect. You have the ability to plug in a flight plan to Seattle. Fly north my friend!

    2. Oh... Yes, therefore you can have it. Good guess. Not. Answer coming soon!

    1. No...but great guess. And technically the ELT off, does auto work if necessary. But if you turned the switch on, then it would turn on. So that can't be it. Auto-trim, I think that magic just works without and off on switch that might be off when it's armed for auto control. :0

  7. Not all 777’s have the Cabin/Utility switch fitted Now, “What switches are normally left in OFF for normal operation?” Therapeutic Oxygen sys?

    1. Therapeutic Oxygen System... is this for the pilots? Never heard of such a thing. Okay... I should clarify, these are aircraft operational systems.

    2. It’s a system for a passenger that requires oxygen for the entire flight, from the ring main. Yes, it’s for the passengers, normally OFF, switched ON by the Pilot when required. Switch is on the overhead panel under a black guard 😎 I claim the prize!

    3. Oh cool. I had no idea. So, these switches have to be off for automatic operation. If you turn them on, they do not work automatically. Answer coming soon!

  8. Hydraulic Air Driven Demand Pumps?

    Replies
    1. Good guess, but the Hydraulic Demand pumps are left in AUTO for normal operation. Which you would think auto is an excellent position for Automatic operation. Not Off like these other switches.

  9. Arrgghhh !!! It has to be a function that would have a label like "disable" or "bypass" in normal operating mode, so normally it is disabled or bypassed, and you have to turn the switch "on" to turn the function off... Nice trick Q ! Absolutely NO IDEA.
