New Years Resolution Success:

Success begins with a decision!

2014 I made quite a few resolutions
and yes... I kept many:

 Me in 2014

HEALTH:

No Sugar! I exercised daily! Drank copious amounts of water. Laughed loud and hard. I did meditate, but not daily as planned. Down time ... 48 hours a month without internet failed miserably. But only because I was accepted into graduate school, and that took priority. My computer is used daily. Two of my resolutions were in conflict.

FAMILY:

I saw each of my grandchildren every month! Yes... I did it. Seattle, Austin, and Bend. Amazing but true and such a blessing to see them. December they all came to Seattle.

I golfed with my husband once. But that's problem, I said I was going to, but did not specify the number of days. Be specific when making plans. But I did build him a golf course. :)

FLYING

I made it to OSH, but I did not get my glider rating. But I have a great plan coming up. My friend and statistics teammate will be working to make this a reality. Glider hours count toward total flight time

EDUCATION:

I did well enough on my GRE and was accepted into ERAU's graduate program. Working toward my PhD!

PUBLICATION:

Flight For Safety is published! Flight To Success is complete, but awaiting publication. Two children's books written, awaiting illustration. Flight For Survival is plotted and outlined. Movies...not in screen play form yet. But I have to leave something for next year.  And my A330 study guides will be written first quarter of 2015.

Resolution Success!

How to Achieve Success can be in the palm of your hands. Literally. Flight To Success Be the Captain of Your Life will be available January 2015. Secrets on how to make all your dreams come true!

Happy New Year!
2015 Resolutions on New Years Day!

How did you do on your resolutions
last year?

Enjoy the Journey!

Air Asia 8501

What Happened?

CNN breaking news is live, and the experts are on a roll. One said that  it's normal to climb above a thunderstorm. No it's not! While we may climb to get above turbulence, we do not fly into thunderstorms and think they can out climb them. Other airplanes flew the same route! Yes... but weather changes.

What happened?
We don't know.

What we know is:
  • Pilots must get thorough weather briefings.
  • Pilots must understand the weather challenges in the Intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), and associated weather patterns.
  • Pilots must understand high altitude characteristics.

What airlines can do:
  • Provide weather training.
  • Provide jet performance training.

What Pilots can do:

Do not get so committed to the plan that you are unwilling to change that plan. If you can't go over it, and you can't go around it, and you can't go through it: Make a 180 degree turn and return to the departure airport and land.

What Passengers can do:

When you take delays, thank the airline, your pilots, the flight attendants and the gate agents. Delays are for your safety.

Fly Safe!

Enjoy the Journey!

2014 Look Back

Most Popular Posts:

2014 is coming to a close, and with it so much happened this year. My youngest grandchild was born New Years day, I took the GRE and was accepted into graduate school at ERAU, Flight For Safety was published, I passed my first quarter in school. I built a golf course. My mother in law passed away, but she lived an incredible life. I also kept most of my 2104 resolutions.

I'm on a flight now, and thought how much fun to see the most popular blogs in 2014. Here you go. Enjoy! It's all about the journey.

A330 Pilots Wanted

 For NextGen Simulator Study

January 12-16 & 20-23, 2015

The FAA is planning a simulator study in Oklahoma City on the days of January 12-16 and 20-23. A separate crew, one Captain and one First Officer, from the same airline is required for each day.

The study is open to all current Delta and US Airways/American A330 line captains and first officers. Retired pilots, simulator instructors and management pilots are not eligible for the study. Check Airmen are generally excluded, but exceptions are taken when necessary to fill available slots.

You will need to Jump seat or non-rev to OKC the day before your session. Your hotel reservation will be at the Wyndham Garden. The FAA shuttle will pick you up around 0630 the morning of the study. Each crew will participate in a 6 hour R&D session in the FAA’s B737 Level D simulator. Show time of 0700; a briefing time of 0715; an on-motion time of 0800; a 15 minute break at 0945; off-motion at 1200; de-brief time of 1210 and release not later than 1315.

You will receive $425.00 compensation, plus $99 per diem, hotel reimbursement; and airport parking or cab fees, if necessary. Pilots choosing to drive from within a 200 mile radius will receive mileage reimbursement. Once your date has been established, you will receive detailed information regarding hotel reservations, directions and other logistics.

This, of course, is a non-jeopardy event and your participation is important to future research. You will also be a part of ground breaking changes to the National Airspace System.

You may only participate for one event, but please provide any and all days you have available, which increases your chance of participation. Since this is a new study, all of you are eligible to participate.

Please respond with your airline, seat position, cell number, and if you are interested. Respond to BTAeronautical@gmail.com. I realize this is well in advance of published schedules, so please provide availability when you have it.

As always, please invite your fellow pilots to join the list. I look forward to starting the New Year off with this exciting event, and look forward to more opportunities for all of you in the coming months.

Thank you,
Brian Townsend

North Star

"Many years ago the “North Star” crew took up a collection every year for toys to take to the White Mountain Orphanage (Near Nome) – the same White Mountain mentioned in Johnny Horton’s 1960 hit song “North to Alaska”.  The ship anchored in Golovin Bay and we ran their freight (and toys) up the river to White Mountain in LCM cargo lighters.  It was “Christmas in July” but the kids didn’t seem to mind. " Captain Jim Wright.

Share the gift of the Holidays.
It's about the feeling of love!

Do you have a link to Holiday Joy we could share?
Send it my way and I'll add it to the list!

Turbo The Flying Dog

Friday's Fabulous Flyer!

Turbo

My favorite past time - tearing squeakers out of toys
Worst habit - Licking my private parts in public
Favorite food - That's a tough one! EVERYTHING! Except lemons, I do not like those.
Best toy - Antlers! I will chew on those all day long
I sleep when my parents are gone, but when they are home, I make sure that I am the center of attention!
Best friend - Olive! She's part poodle, part schnauzer and is my flight instructor in my second book!

Hi! I'm Turbo! In winter of 2012 I was a very scared puppy at a high kill shelter. Then one day this place called a rescue came and picked me up and took me to their house. Shortly after that day they brought me to something called an airport. I heard this really loud noise from this weird machine. The rescue said it was called an airplane and it had wings. It did not look like a bird to me! Then two people came out of the plane and greeted me. I knew I wanted to go in this airplane with them!

The people in the plane were called pilots and said that I could now call them "Mom" and "Dad". Soon I was in the airplane with them and then the loud noise came back and we were flying in the sky! I don't remember much after that. I fell asleep. When I woke up, I got to help put the plane away and go see my new home.

Now my days are spent laying around the house, playing in 10 acres of woods, or visiting with my sisters: a hedgehog, a rabbit, a cat, and 6 hens! On weekends my parents will bring me traveling with them in the airplane. I always decide that is the best time to take a nap and rest up for the adventure ahead of us. So far, I have logged over 50 hours of flight time! I've even been to Canada and the Bahamas! I admit I'm a bit spoiled, and I get even more spoiled when we travel. Everyone loves to see me hop out of the plane and to pet me and tell me I'm a good boy!

Lately, I've been going to a lot of photo shoots and have been doing a lot of interviews, even on live TV! This is because my mom and her friend wrote a children's story book all about me! My mom read it to me the other day and I must say I look quite handsome! My parents say they are very proud of me for handling all the book interviews so well and for being such a good co-pilot. I told them that I must have been born to fly! That's about all there really is to know about me, I think...squirrel!!!

Victoria Neuville: "Turbo the Flying Dog is part one of a children's book series. I adopted my dog Turbo, whom the story is based upon, in December of 2012. Since it was a four hour drive to the rescue, my husband and I opted to fly. Turbo was just 6 weeks old and has been flying all over the country with us ever since. Soon, friends and family pressured me to make a Facebook page of all of Turbo's flying adventures.

Out of that, my friend and co-author, Kelly, and I developed the idea for a children's books series. We both had always wanted to write a children's book and here was our opportunity. Kelly's dog, Olive, takes a main role in book 2, Turbo Learns to Fly, as Turbo's flight instructor. But, Turbo helps her out as well, as she's having trouble being the only female pooch in a male dominated industry. Book 2 is expected in May 2015.

The best gift for the child in your life!

Victoria sent me a copy of Turbo. I will be reading to the grandkids this weekend. I've already read it..the kids will love it, and you will too!

Happy Holidays!!

Twas The Night Before Christmas Aviation Style

Twas the night before Christmas, and out on the ramp,
Not an airplane was stirring, not even a Champ.
The aircraft were fastened to tiedowns with care,
In hopes that come morning, they would still be there.

The fuel trucks were nestled, all snug in their spots,
With gusts from two-forty at 39 knots.
I slumped at the fuel desk, now finally caught up,
And settled down comfortably, resting my butt.

When the radio lit up with noise and with chatter,
I turned up the scanner to see what was the matter.
A voice clearly heard over static and snow,
Called for clearance to land at the airport below.

He barked his transmission so lively and quick,
I'd have sworn that the call sign he used was "St. Nick".
I ran to the panel to turn up the lights,
The better to welcome this magical flight.

He called his position, no room for denial,
"St. Nicholas One, turnin' left base to final."
And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Rutan-built sleigh, with eight Rotax Reindeer!

With vectors to final, down the glideslope he came,
As he passed all fixes, he called them by name:
"Now Ringo! Now Tolga! Now Trini and Bacun!
On Comet! On Cupid!" What pills was he takin'?

While controllers were sittin', and scratchin' their head,
They phoned to my office, and I heard it with dread,
The message they left was both urgent and dour:
"When Santa pulls in, have him please call the tower."

He landed like silk, with the sled runners sparking,
Then I heard "Left at Charlie," and "Taxi to parking."
He slowed to a taxi, turned off of three-oh
And stopped on the ramp with a "Ho, ho-ho-ho..."

He stepped out of the sleigh, but before he could talk,
I ran out to meet him with my best set of chocks.
His red helmet and goggles were covered with frost
And his beard was all blackened from Reindeer exhaust.

His breath smelled like peppermint, gone slightly stale,
And he puffed on a pipe, but he didn't inhale.
His cheeks were all rosy and jiggled like jelly,
His boots were as black as a cropduster's belly.

He was chubby and plump, in his suit of bright red,
And he asked me to "fill it, with hundred low-lead."
He came dashing in from the snow-covered pump,
I knew he was anxious for drainin' the sump.

I spoke not a word, but went straight to my work,
And I filled up the sleigh, but I spilled like a jerk.
He came out of the restroom, and sighed in relief,
Then he picked up a phone for a Flight Service brief.

And I thought as he silently scribed in his log,
These reindeer could land in an eighth-mile fog.
He completed his pre-flight, from the front to the rear,
Then he put on his headset, and I heard him yell, "Clear!"

And laying a finger on his push-to-talk,
He called up the tower for clearance and squawk.
"Take taxiway Charlie, the southbound direction,
Turn right three-two-zero at pilot's discretion"

He sped down the runway, the best of the best,
"Your traffic's a Grumman, inbound from the west."
Then I heard him proclaim, as he climbed through the night,
"Merry Christmas to all! - traffic's in sight.

Happy Holidays!

All I Want For Christmas...

Joy and Peace to the World

When asked what I want for Christmas, I always say nothing. Just for my family and friends to be happy, healthy, and have all their dreams come true. I also want to help future pilots reach their dreams in a strong industry. I want to make the airline industry safer. I also want to keep cameras out of the cockpit. But for me? There is only one gift you can give me, that will help all those wishes come true.

All I want for Christmas this year
is for you to share my novels with the world!

For me, you can gift Flight For Control and Flight For Safety to a friend or family member. You can share my books by sending this link too. Telling someone about these novels is the greatest gift, that keeps on giving! Autographed and gift wrapped copies are available from this blog too, with huge savings if you buy both!

Share the gift of reading with those you love this Holiday Season,  and make everyone's dreams come true!

Happy Holidays!!!

Thanksmas was a GREAT Success!!!

Twas 15 days before Christmas
When the holidays did start
The Elves were all in town
And love filled each heart

Twas 14 days before Christmas
And the Elves went bowling
Fun was had by all
And faces were glowing

13 days before Christmas
And the Seattle rain did stop
The elves went for a Thanksmas Egg hunt
The fun was non-stop

Presents were opened
A feast had by all
The elves skipped their naps
But they all had a ball

12 days before Christmas
Time for the Elves to all home
But memories will linger
And we will never be alone

Happy Holidays to all
And to all a great flight!

Happy ThanksMas!

New Holiday Tradition in Progress!

With three daughters, 7 grandkids, three states, in-laws, out-laws, and all the complications of the season with travel and commitments, we are reducing holiday stress by creating a new family tradition.

We invented a new Holiday:
Happy Thanksmas!

Thanksmas is a time that all the sisters, cousins, mom and dad come together for a fun filled four-day weekend. Nestled someplace between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we will be playing reindeer games, going on a Thanksmas egg hunt, swimming, taking bubble baths, opening gifts, having a pizza party to decorate the tree and a great Thanksmas Day feast.

There is always a way to share the holiday season with those you love.  And equally important to understand as families grow, we remain flexible to holiday demands. I'll be back next week! Have a GREAT weekend!!!

XO Karlene

In the mean time... spread the word about Flight For Control and Flight For Safety. They will make great Christmas gifts for all, and for all a good night!
