Friday's Fabulous Flyer is...

The Boeing 777

My New Plane!

I am coming back to the Boeing and this time on the B777! What does this mean besides flying very cool airplane? My 8th type-rating, a Los Angeles base, and really great bunk for fatigue mitigation. Not to mention some new cities to explore around the world. And, I love training! I'll know in a week when that should occur! Until then...

  4. Karlene,

At my airline we fly the 757/767 and the 777. Each of the jets has their own moniker. The 757 is known as the ice box because it is very difficult to keep the jumpseaters warm especially in the winter.

The 767 is known as the sh*t box because the lavatory is on the flight deck. There is no hardened door on the 767, it designed that way.

The 777 is known as the tool box because that is where all the "difficult" Captains go to finish out their career.

Welcome to the tool box, I have heard it flies like a Cesena.

    1. My option is the tool box over the sh*t box. So... B747s flew like a Cessna too, so I'm thinking that some fun flying is about to begin!! Any chance you will earn the status to be considered a tool to go into that box? Much better than freezing your knuckles off in ice box, or living in the sh*t box... Okay, what about the sand box? I'm thinking there must be one out there someplace.
Thanks for your comment!! Any study guides floating around your company that can pass on my way?

    2. I will ask around for gouge...there is all kinds of stuff out there.

I am scheduled to going to Captain 757 in Feb. FedEx does big bids rather than small on-going bids. I could have held Captain for a few years now but I wanted to wait until I got some relative seniority. I will be sliding into the 50% range when I finish training.

The hard part is giving up the seniority. I am the number 32 FO (7%) in the 757. But the kick in the wallet will be nice.

My problem with the 777 is that it carries too much gas. I really have no desire to sit in that tube of death for 14 hours. I much prefer to sit in the tube of ice for an hour or two.

      Congratulations!

    3. Thank you!!! Way to go Captain! That's exciting. And 50%... awesome. I'm thinking I'll have 3 or 4 people below me. But, the plug on the international planes are not bad...even on reserve. I get you on the ice versus gas. But, ours have super nice bunks. I'm seeing some good naps during those long flights! And, well... I miss my Boeings!!!

  5. If it is a Captain party then it will be on a layover with a free buffet and dollar drinks. We can talk about how the company is screwing us, how tough it is to pay our taxes, how our spouses are spending all our money, how our kids have purple hair and a nose ring, how those young FOs cant fly their way out of a wet paper bag and a constant re-telling of that one time where we were the hero of the sky and we saved the airplane in spite of the best efforts of the other crew members. Sounds like fun, count me in Captain!

    1. Thank you KB! I wish!!! I'm going the wrong way to get that stripe. I'd have to move to small aircraft, move to NY, live in a crash pad and sit reserve on domestic plane for that stripe. I'm estimating 4 years for that 4th stripe. I will still have to go to a domestic aircraft, but perhaps on the west coast. Hard to step back to domestic once you're an international pilot... But I will...when all other conditions fit.
