Buying An Airplane

What about a Beechcraft Sierra?

Robert Clancey from Honolulu is looking to buy an aircraft. He is just starting his search, and wondering about a Beechcraft Sierra.

What do you think?

A similar question two years ago between a v-tail or straight tail was the topic in

What about a
Cessna or Cherokee?

Enjoy the Journey!

  1. I did a lot of research the last few months on airplanes to buy. I compared all 3 of these in great detail. The Beech Sierra is a decent airplane with a lot of cabin space. But they are underpowered. They are not very fast nor do they have good climb rates or useful loads for what they are. Especially with the added maintenance cost of retractable gear. The Cessna 172 or Cherokee 160 or 180 are all great airplanes and speed/load/ability wise are reasonably comparable. Between those two it comes down to your preference of high wing or low wing. Personally the high wing can't be beat in this category. They are much better for passenger viewing as well as getting people in and out of the airplane. Honolulu can be a tough place to own an airplane. A hangar is pretty much mandatory to help mitigate airframe corrosion. It's worth looking into the cost of this first because they recently raised hangar rental costs statewide. I would go so far as to say that it would be best to not purchase an airplane if you can't get a hangar to protect the investment, especially in Hawaii.

  2. Although I did my Private training in the venerable Cessna 172, once I started Commercial & ATP training in Piper and Beechcraft airplanes, I quickly became a low wing fan. Maybe because it's more like the airliners I want to pilot soon!

    1. Natasha, I followed your footsteps! And you will be flying those low wing aircraft soon. We need to catch up! And... you need to write a comment on Amazon for Flight To Success too! :) Thanks for your comment.
