Fly Girls...

209 Girls Take to the Sky!

"Igniting the spark of imagination is the first step in opening the mind to all possibilities in life."
Karlene

This weekend some of the most generous pilots in the Seattle area took women and girls on their first flights at the Seattle's Museum of Flight, during Women Fly week for Women of Aviation.

The weekend was nothing short of spectacular.

Smiles. Laughter. Excitement.

Today was all about the girls... Leave a comment as to what you thought of your first flight and enter a chance to win a copy of Syd Blue's book, Fly Girl. Friday I will announce the 15 lucky winners! Until then... enjoy every moment and tell us how you liked your flight!

  1. What an amazing event this is. I think introducing aviation to anyone's life, early or late, is a great thing. To see all these smiles makes me smile, too!

My first flight in a small plane was spectacular. It was an early November morning. The sun had just risen above the horizon and I "took off" (with a little help from the instructor) The skies were clear, and the sun painted it with all its amazing colors.

The feeling is best described as "pure joy" I left all the worries and problems on the ground. In the plane I felt happy. No worries. Just happy. To defy gravity like that, was thrilling.

Now, 2 years after my first solo, I still get that tickling feeling in my stomach when I take off in a plane. It is still so much fun. I enjoy every second of it.

For those of you, whom have yet to experience the joy of flying, I would definitely encourage you to take a flight with a pilot friend or an instructor at your local flying club. It is so definitely worth it (And not just a cliché)

  2. Karlene- what an amazing event. I saw all of those photos on Facebook and each and everyone of them are amazing. As always I wish I was there to see the excitement in person on all of those faces and to intake that positive energy. As for me, I finally saw the movie "Flight" this weekend. Better late than never. ;)

    1. Thank you Linda! I still remember your first flight and your thought... "I could do this!" Maybe one day. And... one day I'm going to be back into an airplane that I can fly the kids.

  4. Karlene, this is such a cool event. I love how you've gotten so many girls to experience flight. There needs to be more female/teen pilots out there!

So cool how you inspired so many people with an event like this. I hope one day to help out with something like this if given the opportunity!

Thanks so much for spending your time on something like this,

    1. Oh... we're encouraging boys too. But this is due to the fact after a 103 years, still less than 6% of the licensed pilots are girls. We're just giving them an opportunity to see if a we spark a light. Yes... we gave boys a flight too. :)
      Thanks for your comment.

My name is Sara Ford, and I took a flight today that you helped out with. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed seeing places that I've been before, from the sky. It was a really awesome experience and its definitely inspired me to learn how to fly or at least look into how I can learn! Thank you so much!

  7. Thank you to all the organizers and volunteers. What a great experience. My young daughter and I took a flight on Saturday - a perfect day for flying! Our pilot Bill was super friendly and took time to explain some of the controls to his young copilot. Before the flight I spent time talking to a female Navy helicopter pilot and learned her story, which I shared with my daughter. A great day. Thanks again!

  8. For Cindy Johnson:

    Hi Karlene***

    My name is Cindy Johnson
My daughter and I attended the museum of flight on Saturday and had an amazing time!

I have signed in but can't figure out how to leave a comment. I don't want to start a blog but would very much like a chance to win the fly girl book for my 9 year old daughter Victoria.

So here's her comment, maybe you can put it on there?
She is pic #24 (beware of prop blast) and #26.

It was very exciting, fun, thrilling and my first time ever in a plane! I also liked the headset and microphone. Cant wait to go back again for the flight simulator!

  10. Hi Karlene

Thanks for an awesome opportunity! I am normally wary of little planes but our pilot Kai is a great pilot and it was 'smooth sailing' all the way!

(Thank you for sneaking my birthday boy on as well...)

  11. When we rode in the plane I was the one to sit in the co-pilot chair because my sister didn't want to, since I got to sit up there Bill let me fly the plane and take it from 2,000ft to 2,500ft it was very exciting. It was a beautiful day for flying on Saturday. When we landed Bill told me I could hold on to the controller and that seems like it is very difficult to land a plane. Even though it was difficult I would still consider flying a plane again.
    Thanks again,

  12. Karlene,
My 5-year old daughter and I enjoyed our day at the Museum of Flight so much. It was definitely one of the coolest and most educational things we've ever done together. Neither of us had ever been in a small plane and it really opened our eyes to the possibility of being a pilot. Maybe we'll learn together! Thanks for being such a wonderful and helpful part of a very special day.
    Sincerely,
    Janice Blackmore (and Luna!)
