PED in the Flight Deck!

Last Month I wrote an article about a new FAR: PEDs in the Flight Deck Prohibited! This post created quiet a discussion. Then I received an interesting email from a friend working for an international airline.

His captain was looking up a system on his iPad, as they were having a curious indication and wanted to verify and review their systems knowledge. They were enroute over the ocean, keeping an eye or two on the instruments, and the captain whipped out his ipad and looked up the system.

The first officer enlightened him of this new FAR. He told him his iPad was illegal because it was distracting and the FAA created a regulation prohibiting it.

The captain was incredulous. "How could the manual be safer than the iPad?" he asked. "Okay," he said. "I certainly don't want to violate a regulation."

He put his iPad away and brought out the manual.

My friend sent me the photos.

What's more distracting...
You decide.

If you have not read Flight For Safety yet, it's time.

My novels are part of the plan to help and industry keep our passengers safe and provide great jobs for future pilots. Please join me on the journey and remember to leave a comment for Flight For Control and Flight For Safety (the sequel), on Amazon in order for a chance to win a NWA 747-400 model!

Stay proficient. Fly safe.
Create a jobs we can all be proud of.
We're all in this together.

Enjoy the Journey!

  1. But how is using an iPad 'unsafe'? Access is instantaneous, you don't have to rifle through pages looking for the information. Surely good CRM is, get the information as soon as possible and act upon it. Precious seconds and minutes are wasted by fiddling to find out which page number you have to go to in a bulky and cumbersome manual?!

    1. David, you are so right. We are all wondering that ourselves. That's the irony of this. I think it's just making regulation for regulation sake. Thank you for your comment!

  2. Very welcome! Let's hope the FAA come out with another cracker for the industry to tear apart soon! Love the blog keep it up :)

  3. They would have been fine. The reg states that "use of electronic flight bags, digitized charts or manuals" is acceptable provided they are FAA-approved. Basically, if it's work-related, it's fine.

It is a stupid reg, though.

    1. You're so right! And then we must define personal use and professional. If it's reading something not related to work... but is going to keep my captain awake ... I'm thinking that's essential to safety. I'm just saying... whatever works, works! Thanks for the comment!

  4. It's not about distraction, it's about being intelligent and realize what's more important: the sodding iPad or the 300 passengers on my shoulders.

No papers is better. Reduces fuel consumption. We need this concept. We need to hit our goals for 2050.

And if you cannot concentrate on flying, perhaps you should consider on finding another job.

Seriously, I really get fed up when this sort of idea gets in the middle of the streamline. Outrageous.

    1. No kidding! That is the bottom line. So.. .wait until the comedy comes out... we'll emphasize some of the crazy stupid rules. :)

    2. Please do emphasize. There's no change without looking into them and laugh our heads off.

Who did this? Is this a person or a board of executives? Lawyers or whatever?

I wanna know who let them on stage.

    3. I could not agree more!! Been on the road and heading out again. I'll make sure I monitor and laugh appropriately along the way. :)
